02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Highlight Arts was set up to facilitate creative exchanges between Scottish writers and artists with writers and artists at risk internationally, and to establish residency opportunities in the UK for artists who find themselves at risk due to their work, identity or beliefs. After a couple of fallow years, Highlight Arts will build up its work gradually over the next five years, starting by curating and facilitating digital creative exchanges between Scottish and international artists, and building up to delivering short-term respite residencies for artists at risk within several years. Our long-term aim is to establish Edinburgh as a member of the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN), hosting a regular residency for artists in exile, with each artist staying for one to two years. The residency would provide accommodation free of charge and a monthly stipend, as well as offering the resident practical support.

Constitutional objectives
4 The organisation is established for charitable purposes of the advancement of the arts, and in particular the objects are: 4.1 to advance education in contemporary culture and of cross-cultural dialogue and understanding, by means of the encouragement of the arts, including (but not limited to) the provision of performances, events and workshops of international music, literature and film. 4.2 to advance citizenship and community development.
