02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Established in 1870, completely self-funding & community based. Formed as an outlet for the amateur musicians within the mining community, Whitburn Band has grown to be of the most successful & celebrated brass bands in the UK. We continue to make a significant contribution to cultural life in Scotland, performing regularly at local community and major events such as Scotland's international rugby games and the Edinburgh International & Fringe Festival. The Band is committed and enthusiastic about its future and to this end are 12 years into our Player Pathway Project. Within this project we teach young people to play a brass or percussion instruments. In addition to the pathway system, we have introduced our new ‘Side-by-Side’ project, allowing young players to sit in a rehearsal with Whitburn Band giving them a chance to build their confidence, fell included & create opportunities for development, musicianship & excellence.
