02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Stranraer and Galloway Visual Arts Society, was set up with the main aim of making ‘art’ accessible to all, regardless of age, ability or experience, or any other such distinctions. It also hoped to facilitate opportunities for amateur and professional artists to exhibit work in the area with little ‘gate-keeping’. D&G Council have responsibility for the Wigtown Educational Trust Art Collection (WET) and have previously suggested selling off parts of it. This did not happen due to strong public protest, so the group felt it should become involved in curating the collection and using it for its original purpose rather than it be held in storage.. To meet the above aims, the group curate 2/3 annual exhibitions, enhancing opportunities for work to be seen by the public, hold workshops and demonstrations and have donated contemporary work to the WET collection. Membership is free and to date all activities have been free of charge thus removing the barrier of financial hardship.
