02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The charity was established to renovate the old Johnston School in Kirkcudbright and to provide the building as a focal point for the community to encourage and establish activities in arts, recreation, heritage, culture and science. During the year the Trust put on a number of events relating to music and art and through its subsidiary operates the Dark Space Planetarium to encourage interest in space and science.

Constitutional objectives
4 The SCIO’s purposes are to benefit the community of Kirkcudbright and District which comprises the postcode district of DG6(“the Community”) with the following objects: 4.1 The advancement of citizenship and community development within the Community. 4.2 The Advancement of the Arts, Heritage, Culture or Science 4.3 The Provision of Recreational Facilities or the organisation of recreational facilities, or the organisation of re creational activities, with the object of improving conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended 4.4 The Advancement of Education 4.5 The Advancement of Environmental Protection or Improvement But only to the extent that the above purposes are consistent with furthering the achievement of sustainable development.
