02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

BUG exists to advance community development by providing community transport in the extremely remote Highland communities of Glenelg and Arnisdale, where there is no public transport service and the nearest shops, banks and health services are nearly an hour away. We do this by funding and running two services. The BUG Taxi is a subsidised dial-a-taxi connecting Glenelg, Arnisdale, Ratagan and Shiel Bridge with Citylink coaches to Inverness, Fort William, Glasgow and Portree, at a flat fare of £5 with no concessions. The Kyle Express is a weekly minibus taking residents to Kyle of Lochalsh, our nearest centre, for shopping, appointments and services for £1 each way. Both are open to everyone in the community. The trustees raise the funds, and a paid contractor works as administrator to manage bookings, ticketing, invoicing and liaison with our service operator.
