02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The charity's purpose is to organise an annual hot air balloon festival in Strathaven over a weekend in late August. 20 to 25 balloon crews are invited to attend. It involves schools through education in ballooning and an art competition. Local musicians will perform from mid-day till late on a proper stage with a professional sound system to create a wealth of entertainment whilst awaiting on ballooning activity. A variety of fairground rides, a classic car show and commercial and charity stalls are all part of the experience. There is no entry fee. Three remote parking sites with a shuttle bus service into the town address the gridlock that would ensue with 20,000 visitors descending on the town. Planning and licensing is monitored by South Lanarkshire Council Resilience Committee, but no public funds are available for this event: funding comes from programme and raffle ticket sales, stall lets, local businesses and public donations.
