02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Blackford Highland Games exists to keep Scotland's traditional Highland Games alive in southern Perthshire, and to bring our community together. Games have been held in Blackford every year since 1870, and we were a founding member of what is now the Royal Scottish Highland Games Association. We do this by organising an annual Highland Games on the last Saturday in May at the Keir & Cawdor Games Park, which the landowner lends us each year. The day includes heavy events (caber, hammer, shot and tug of war), track and field athletics, cycling, Highland dancing and piping competitions, plus trade stands, refreshments and live music from local musicians. The charity is run entirely by a volunteer committee. We fund the Games through gate income, trade stands and support from local sponsors and funders. The Games give local people a chance to compete and celebrate together, and they bring visitors from across Scotland and overseas into the village.

Constitutional objectives
4 The organisation's purposes are: 4.1 To advance public participation in sport and cultural activities by organising, promoting and running the annual Blackford Highland Games in the village of Blackford. 4.2 To advance knowledge and understanding of the heritage and culture of Scotland through an appreciation of the history and tradition of the sporting and other activities at highland games. 4.3 To support by way of grant or otherwise any charity, organisation, activity or project which advances the citizenship or community development within the Blackford area, in particular through the maintenance or improvement of the physical, social or economic infrastructure and amenity.
