02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Friends was set up to help the Elphinstone Institute in its work in encouraging the understanding of the cultures of the North-East. Events, projects and festivals connected with this aim are supported by funding and organising support from the members of the Friends.

Constitutional objectives
To work with the Elphinstone Institute to develop its educational programme and to take it into the communities of the North and North-East of Scotland, encouraging understanding of the cultures of the North and North East and encouraging participation in cultural activities within local communities as well as bringing members of the community into the University to develop their learning. To organise and fund - alone and in partnership with like-purposed bodies - cultural events which showcase and develop the culture and traditions of the North and North-East and encourage and enable participation in cultural activities by members of the public.
