02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Kelso Heritage Society holds seven public talks per annum on local and national history relevant to Kelso. It produces publications and literature that raise awareness of local history and heritage. Develop new projects that enhance Kelso and district's historical, environmental and cultural heritage by holding exhibitions and is currently participating in civic plans for marking the 900th anniversary of the founding of Kelso Abbey. Support is also being given to the establishment of the Russell Cawthorn collection of books on the First World War at the town's library. We hold a long term lease from Scottish Borders Council on land that has now been restored as Kelso Community Orchard with different varieties of apple and pear trees.

Constitutional objectives
The organisation's purposes are: 4.1 to promote awareness of local heritage. 4.2 to seek ways to re-establish a museum or heritage facility in Kelso. 4.3 to forge links with the local schools, community groups and youth organisations to promote education of local heritage. 4.4 to liaise and co-operate with local, regional or national agencies to promote local heritage appreciation in Kelso.
