02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
ARET was established to support access to education and educational attainment of adults and children living primarily in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is the third poorest country in the world where education is not freely available to children. Roughly 70% of Sierra Leone’s adult population have limited literacy and numeracy skills as schooling has been interrupted by a prolonged civil war, Ebola outbreak and more recently significant flooding in the country. More recently the impact of COVID 19 and the war in Ukraine resulted in significant food insecurity and high inflation. Constitutional objectives
7.1 The SCIO will promote, advance and further its charitable purposes by operating as a 'grant-giving' charity which will support financially and otherwise education in developing countries (initially, but not exclusively, Sierra Leone) by ordinarily but not exclusively providing grants to organisations working in such localities and carrying out activities such as teacher training and generally increasing access to education. The SCIO aims to widen educational access and participation, both for children and adults, to increase self-sufficiency through learning in order to increase an active and sustainable contribution to society and communities in such countries.
