02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The Haddington Garden Trust SCIO is responsible for the management of St. Mary's Pleasance, the community garden 0f 0.65Ha in Haddington, East Lothian. Its purpose is to preserve the garden for the public benefit and develop the garden as an old Scottish garden

Constitutional objectives

3. PURPOSES (1) The Charity Trustees,(' the Trustees'), shall hold (Firstly) ALL and WHOLE that piece of ground extending to one acre and twenty Two decimal or one thousand parts of an acre or thereby lying to the east of Haddington House in the Royal Burgh of Haddington and County of East Lothian described in and delineated and edged red on the plan annexed to the Disposition by the Trustees for the East Lothian Antiquarian and Field Naturalists' Society with consents therein mentioned in favour of The Most Noble Douglas, Duke of Hamilton, Brandon and Chatelherault K.T., P.C.,G.C.V.O., A.F.C., LLD dated Twenty Eighth March Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Two and subsequent dates and recorded in the Division of the General Register of Sasines for the County of East Lothian on the Thirtieth day of August Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Two, and (Secondly) ALL and WHOLE that piece of ground lying to the east of Haddington House in the Royal Burgh of Haddington and County of East Lothian described in and delineated and edged blue on the plan annexed to the Disposition by the Lamp of Lothian Collegiate Trustees in favour of the Trustees of The Haddington Garden Trust dated First December Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Three and subsequent dates and recorded in the said Division of the General Register of Sasines on Twenty Fourth May Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Four, as an open precinct in all time coming to enhance the environment of St. Mary's Church and Haddington House, Haddington and to lay it out, develop and cultivate it as an example of an old Scottish garden or Pleasance for the recreation and enjoyment of members of the public living in or visiting Haddington. ( 2) To enable activities, lectures or demonstrations for the study of horticulture, arboriculture, botany or soil fertility generally or particularly with reference to old methods of cultivating, laying out and maintaining gardens and orchards in Scotland. (3) To co-operate with any person, educational body or society in carrying out research or instruction in any matter which relates to horticulture, arboriculture, botany or soil fertility and to encourage the interest of members of the public in any of these matters. ( 4) To purchase or lease or erect land or buildings in addition to the said areas of ground for the purpose of carrying out any of the purposes of the Trust or to preserve the amenity of any part of Haddington for the benefit of members of the public.
