02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The charity provides financial support to Newbattle Abbey College, a separate charitable entity, which is a residential adult education college for students of not less than 18 years of age. The charity promotes arts, culture and heritage through the upkeep of the wider Newbattle Abbey Estate. Income is generated from investments and income from rentying commercial business units within the Estate.

Constitutional objectives

4.1 The objects of the Charity are:- 4.1.1 the advancement of education, training and citizenship through allowing the use of the Subjects by the College Board for the following purposes:- As a Residential Adult Education College for students of not less than 18 years of age. ? As a centre for Conferences, on educational subjects or public questions, Summer Schools and short or long term courses of study and also for educational additional activities in the neighbourhood. ? As a place of study or recreation for persons engaged in or concerned with education or possible work ? As a holiday centre for British and other students if not less than 18 years of age provided always that the Subjects should not be used for the teaching of sectarian religion or as a school of medicine. 4.1.2 the advancement of heritage, culture and the arts through the maintenance and upkeep of the Subjects. 4.1.3 the promotion of such similar charitable purposes, objects or institutions and in such proportions and manner as the Directors shall think fit, provided that for the purposes of this Article the expressions 'charitable purpose' or 'charitable object' shall mean a charitable purpose under section 7 of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 which is also regarded as a charitable purpose in relation to the application of the Taxes Acts from time to time in force, and a 'charitable institution' shall mean a body on the Scottish Charity Register which is also regarded as a charity in relation to the application of the Taxes Acts from time to time in force.
