02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The Community Food Bank - Skye and Lochalsh charity is an independent voluntary group which collects and distributes food and toiletries gathered from donation points across the Island and through purchases from supermarkets. The Foodbank works with statutory services and established voluntary organisations to provide clients/service users with food bags and these can also be requested via email or through Facebook. Two teams of volunteers operate across north and south Skye and they ensure that a supply of food is always available. Volunteers have a variety of roles from ordering supplies on a regular basis, collecting, storing away, checking dates, keeping Blessing boxes stocked, keeping social media up to date, packing and distributing bags. Special bags are made up at Christmas time and along with vouchers these are distributed by agencies across Skye. Records are kept of all food and money donations along with the number of bags distributed.
