02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Blood Bikes Scotland supports NHS Scotland by providing a free, reliable and flexible medical courier service. We transport blood samples, medicines, medical equipment, patient records and other urgent or time-sensitive items between hospitals, laboratories and other healthcare facilities. Our service is delivered across five Scottish NHS regions by trained volunteer riders and drivers using our fleet of motorcycles and cars. By providing transport at no charge to the NHS, we generate significant cost savings by reducing the need for paid commercial couriers. Our volunteer-based service can also respond flexibly and at short notice to transport requirements that may be difficult to accommodate through scheduled NHS transport services. We work closely with NHS Scotland to respond to changing operational needs and ensure that we provide a safe, efficient and dependable service.
