02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Reach Charity, founded in 1978, supports people born with or who acquire upper limb differences in childhood. We provide this support for life, after widening our objectives in December 2024. Being born with an upper limb difference (ULD) is rare - a child may never meet anyone else with the same visible difference as them. From the get-go children with ULD are figuring out how to navigate the world on their terms, and Reach’s role is to provide a support network and community for people with ULD and their families, to enable interaction, support, connection and learning for life. Our reach is growing: we currently support 545 families and 405 adults with ULD in the UK. 74 volunteers give their time to enable our work: volunteer branch coordinators organise local meetups in 18 regions. mentors with ULD enable young people attending RAW (Reach Activity Week) and, more recently, young adults on our 18-25 Retreat & Mentorship Programme.
