02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The charity was set up to purchase and redevelop the old primary building at Leverhulme Memorial School. The charity has redeveloped the building as a multi-purpose hub facility for the community. The hub is now home to a charity shop, gym, launderette, historical society, occasional café and venue space, with plans in place for a permanent community café.

The company has been formed to benefit principally the community of South Harris which comprises South Harris Community Council area ('the Community') but also for the benefit of the whole of the Isle of Harris with the following objects: (l) The advancement of community development (including the advancement of rural regeneration) and the advancement of citizenship. (2) The advancement of education (3) The provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended (4) The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science
