02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The North Berwick Community SCIO seeks to serve the local community and their needs by providing affordable and accessible space for community groups and local businesses, adjusting the rate of hire according to the nature of the hirer. When appropriate and possible, the SCIO may grant a free let to permit struggling groups to function and serve the community - for example, the local NHS Pre-natal classes.

Constitutional objectives

The organisation has been formed to benefit the community of the North Berwick Coastal Area (the 'Community') with the following purposes: 1. The advancement of education principally within the Community. 2. The provision of facilities allowing for organisation of recreational, social and leisure time activities within the Community. 3. To foster a community spirit and promote citizenship with the Community. 4. To promote, establish, operate and/or support any other charitable or similar projects or initiatives for the benefit of the Community or for relief of hardship in the Community whereby the purposes/aims of said projects or initiatives are similar to those of the organisation. 5. Provided that nothing in this constitution shall authorise the application of property or funds of the charity for any purpose unless that purpose is exclusively charitable both under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and under United Kingdom tax legislation.
