02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Fenix Projects SCIO advances community development, recreational facilities, and environmental protection through two core activities: 1. IT Refurbishment We extend the useful life of discarded IT equipment. Since May 2025, we have collected 85 laptops from the public that would otherwise have entered the waste stream. Volunteers spend ~2 hours per laptop adding partner-funded memory, replacing batteries, and installing open-source software (Linux Mint) at no licensing cost. Most laptops are passed to clients in need via partner agencies, with only ~5% replaced due to technical issues. Clients report uniform benefits across education, work, and recreation. Additionally, involving a referred young man boosted his confidence, helping him secure an IT apprenticeship. 2. Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Qualified trustees provide PAT testing for partner charities (e.g., The Black Door Shop, Orchardhill & Merrilea Parish Churches), safety-testing ~400 items annually pro bono, alongside
