02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

To provide 20 allotments for the people of Aviemore, so that allotment holders can grow vegetables and fruit for their own consumption, thereby reducing their airmiles from having to buy imported food. The process of gardening amongst other allotment holders is deemed to be a very therapeutic process, where young families can gain wisdom from older gardeners and also they can help the more elderly people with some of their heavy tasks. Gardening is also a therapeutic activity in itself, having been shown to be very helpful with mental-health issues. Aviemore Allotments Association is now in the final stages of agreeing a Lease with NHS Highland for the site behind the Aviemore Hospital. We have submitted a planning application for change of use of the land, and this is expected to be completed in late January. Thereafter we will do major fundraising and proceed with landscaping the site into 20 allotments of different sizes, including two with wider access for the disabled.
