02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The organisation was set up in 1904 to pay for the return home of the remains of those in the fishing industry who had deceased away from the island of Lewis. This was extended to cover families of fishers and now membership is open to anyone in the Point, Back, Lochs and Stornoway area. The Fund contributes £400 towards the cost of a coffin and up to £800 towards the cost of transporting the remains to Lewis for burial. Annual membership costs £1.50 per person.
