02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
NESFIT's aim is to support householders to retrofit their homes in order to reduce heating costs (reduce fuel poverty), improve occupants' health and reduce carbon emissions (environmental benefit). Experience is showing that retrofit is poorly understood by the public and professionals and groundwork is needed before NESFIT's aim of retrofit at scale will be realised. NESFIT is currently focusing on training, engaging with the public and participating in events. NESFIT partners with the University in the Just Systems project in Torry (Aberdeen). In low income areas, NESFIT is running courses to enable householders to undertake basic upgrading measures themselves and has delivered a project monitoring the condition of a small sample of homes. This identified mould and air quality problems. Funding will be sought to address this. Certified courses are being run for professionals and trades people. NESFIT engages with politicians and public bodies on the challenges of retrofit.

(a) advance environmental protection and improvement as a means of mitigating climate change by delivering to private residents and housing providers located primarily, but not exclusively, in North East Scotland, comprehensive services to support the retrofitting of domestic properties, including the installation of renewable energy systems. (b) advance the health of private residents located primarily, but not exclusively, in North East Scotland by delivering comprehensive retrofit services as a means of ensuring that they live in healthy, warm homes. (c) prevent and relieve poverty by delivering to private residents and housing providers located primarily, but not exclusively, in North East Scotland, comprehensive services to support them to retrofit their homes and domestic properties as a means of ensuring that these are less expensive to run. (d) advance the education of the public and relevant professionals in the subject of retrofitting domestic properties.
