02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The charity awards: (a) grants to recognised charities which the trustees consider worthy of support as funds are available, (b) educational travel scholarships to individuals of both sexes under age 35 engaged in land based industries, preference being given to candidates having a sound practical basis of experience in land based industries which can be beneficially extended by travel to the end that on return they will be able to use the experience gained in travel in a practical way, successful candidates being selected following a thorough application and interview process.

Constitutional objectives

The organisation's purposes are: (i) The awarding of educational travel scholarships in all parts of the world to individuals in Scotland of both sexes under the age of Thirty five years (but with absolute discretion to the Trustees to award scholarships to candidates of Thirty five years of age and over if and when it may seem to them appropriate to do so), provided always that those to whom scholarships are awarded shall have either practical or academic qualifications (or both) in land based industries which for this purpose includes agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture and ancillary industries or professions associated with each of these, and food production ('land based industries'), preference being given to candidates having a sound practical basis of experience in land based industries which can be beneficially extended by travel to the end that on return they will be able to use the experience gained in travel in a practical way. (ii) The making of grants to such other charitable purposes (including charitable foundations) already recognised in law as charitable, along with other purposes analogous to, or within the spirit of, purposes that are recognised as charitable, as the trustees shall, in their absolute discretion, determine.
