02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

Filmhouse aims to present an unparalleled cultural programme of filmmaking from around the world, curating a range of special events and learning activities, working with schools and other groups to promote and facilitate screen education, and providing critical infrastructure and knowledge for curators, festivals and others. A primary focus of Filmhouse’s efforts is audience development – primarily in the Edinburgh City Region but available to all – giving people the opportunity and knowledge to find their way into a rich appreciation of film as a form of art and entertainment, in a welcoming venue that serves as a hub and gathering place for the community.

Constitutional objectives

Constitution of company The Company is established for charitable objects only. Objects 5. The company's objects are the advancement of the Arts. In particular, the Company is established to promote and advance for the public benefit the arts, culture and education by the promotion and encouragement of the art of the moving image, including film, television and related media, and by promoting knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the art of the moving image in its artistic and cultural aspects, including (without prejudice to the foregoing generality): 5.1. the exhibition of cinematographic films, electronically produced moving images and related media, howsoever reproduced and projected, 5.2. to organise, participate in and promote appropriate festivals in Edinburgh, in particular the Edinburgh International Film Festival or other suitable events, having primary objects wholly or partly similar to those of the Company, 5.3. the provision of and support of facilities, institutions and organisations as can provide the public with the widest possible access to the art of the moving image, such facilities, institutions and organisations having primary objects wholly or partly similar to those of the Company, 5.4. the preservation of materials of historical significance relevant to the art of the moving image, 5.5. the provision of information and advice on and education about the art of the moving image including through the exhibition of cultural cinema, and 5.6. to do other such things considered by the directors to be conducive to the above objects.
