02 Purpose and work

What the charity exists to do

The village of Kingseat is a mixed residential and business settlement located 7 km north of Dyce, Aberdeen and 1 km east of Newmachar, Aberdeenshire. Kingseat is accessed by the B979 road and also has pedestrian access to both Newmachar and the Formartine & Buchan Way Trail. The settlement name is visible on maps dating back to 1637 and is said to come from when King Malcolm Canmore rested on a stone on the original Kingseat farm after the slaying of Macbeth at Lumphanan in 1053. Since then, the area was comprised of multiple farms under various ownerships until the site was acquired by the Aberdeen District Lunacy Board in 1859 for a new mental health facility. The foundation stone was laid in 1901 with the facility being open to its first patients in 1904. The first of its kind in Britain and considered by many to be revolutionary, the mental health facility in Kingseat was designed using a village-type layout with low density granite villas and buildings within a planned

The organisation's purposes are, in relation to the area known under the National Records of Scotland as the Settlement of Kingseat (Aberdeenshire), Settlement code S20001816, the boundaries of which are shown by the orange line on the map on page 3, the sustainability and advancement: (a) of health, safety and wellbeing. (b) of community development. (c) of the arts, heritage, culture or science. (d) of the provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended. and (e) of environmental and wildlife protection or improvement, including recycling facilities and furthering the achievement of sustainable development.
