02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
Forth SPAN is a registered charity (SC053321) based in Queensferry and surrounding areas. We are a grassroots organisation with a mission to contribute to reducing deaths by suicide through targeted local approaches including: funding and facilitation of suicide prevention and mental health training and resources. supporting and promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. In March 2025 we ran the first ever Ferry Well festival focussing on mental health and wellbeing for the residents of South Queensferry. The weekend festival included delivering training to over 50 people on suicide awareness, running a dry bar Pub Quiz and running an open community hall festival promoting social activities in South Queensferry.

Constitutional objectives
(a) To save lives and advance health - preventing deaths by suicide through coordinating and facilitating local approaches to improved mental and physical wellbeing. (b) To advance citizenship and community development by acting as a hub and interface to bring together existing local groups and organisations with the people who need them. (c) To advance community development through the championing and facilitation of approaches to suicide prevention, early intervention, and postvention within Queensferry and surrounding communities. (d) To advance education by ensuring that appropriate suicide prevention training and resources are available in the community, and in particular: community groups, schools, and businesses. (e) To provide community development and citizenship through representating Queensferry and surrounding communities at regional and national suicide prevention fora. and (f) To promote health through consideration of the wellbeing and mental health needs of the people of Queensferry and surrounding communities, and ensure that these are being met by any means deemed appropriate by Forth SPAN Trustees and Members.
