02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
The charity a) provides talks, on aspects of the history of Melrose and the Scottish Borders, and occasionally further afield, to members and visitors. b) endeavours to ensure the preservation of artefacts and information of historical interest relevant to Melrose and the surrounding area and c) endeavours to promote the potential of the archaeology at the Old Melrose site, through activities such as guided walks round the site.

Constitutional objectives
The Trust’s purposes are: 2.1 Advancing the education of the public and increasing knowledge and community awareness of the history of Melrose and the Scottish Borders in the context of the history of Scotland via lectures, visitor experiences and collaborative partnerships. And in furtherance thereof: 2.2 The promotion of the preservation of items of interest and artefacts which would be in danger of being lost or damaged. 2.3 The promotion of the Old Melrose initiative as a joint effort between the Trimontium Trust and the Melrose Historical Trust, with the permission of the landowner, for the purpose of investigating the potential for archaeological remains on the Old Melrose estate.
