02 Purpose and work
What the charity exists to do
CCN’s mission is to bring together and support coastal communities in their efforts to protect, restore, and sustainably use marine resources, fostering positive change for the health of our seas. Since its inception, CCN has been a driving force behind remarkable achievements for Scotland's coastal areas. Through collaborative efforts and community-driven initiatives, we've witnessed a surge of new marine restoration projects, the historic designation of the UK's first Hope Spot, the government being held accountable over the use of Acoustic Deterrent Devices on fish farms, and a significant increase in public engagement with marine conservation issues. CCN has evolved from a humble coalition of a few community groups into a force for positive change, uniting nearly 40 members (as of 2026) working across a number of marine-related issues, including marine litter, marine habitat restoration, aquaculture, water pollution and more.

Constitutional objectives
The organisation's purposes are: a) The advancement of environmental protection by supporting local action to protect & restore marine and coastal biodiversity. b) The advancement of citizenship and community development by building capacity for community participation and leadership in marine management c) The advancement of citizenship and community development by advocating for, and providing, a community voice in decision making for the marine environment.
