- Company were requiring employee to undertake decanting activities involving Sodium Hydroxide. Company produce the product themselves and failed to undertake a suitable risk assessment or method statement for the task, so employees were not meeting the minimum PPE requirements detailed within the company’s own Safety Data Sheet. This resulted in employee sustaining chemical burn which required skin graft. Following enforcement action, the company ordered in the Sodium Hydroxide at the correct concentration from another site demonstrating it was reasonably practicable to eliminate the risk all together. The company also have a history of incident within the last 5 years of exposing their employees to sodium hydroxide.
