Official reasons
- Chief in Charge of the National Office Against Organized Crime and Terrorist Financing (ONCDOFT) between January 2018-May 2019. National Commander of the National Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Command (Comando Nacional Antiextorsión y Secuestro (CONAS) between 2014 and 2017. Former Deputy Minister of Prevention and Public Security. Responsible for serious human rights violations, including torture, excessive use of force and the mistreatment of detainees by members of CONAS under his command. Also responsible for the repression of civil society by members of CONAS under his command. Escalona Marrero was arrested by Venezuelan Military Intelligence officials on 14 September on charges of embezzlement, money laundering, criminal association and 'violent outrage' against public officials.
